Thomas Jefferson
We fled Europe seeking religious freedom, as Europe was a mostly Catholic society. When we came to America we became largely protestant, and in our current state we have various religious affiliations. Thomas Jefferson was a large proponent of the “Separation of Church and State”, but we did not actually separate the two until recently. Prayer in schools was not stopped until 1963, and at some point, in our history we held church services in the U.S. Treasury and Capitol buildings. The imagery of biblical teachings or biblical sayings has been displayed in federal buildings and state buildings for much of our countries history.
Thomas Jefferson, coined the term "separation between church and state". This term first came out in a letter that Jefferson wrote to the Danbury Baptist Church in January of 1802. The letter is as follows:
